In the course of discussions between

Sir Patrick Abercrombie and Sir Alexander Grantham before the latter left for Hong Kong, it transpired that Professor Abercrombie would need to spend about 6 weeks in Hong Kong, and it was agreed that he would let us have his views as to the fee he would require for this extended visit. You will see that his views, as given in No.32, are that his fee should be 750 guineas, and that he should be provided with free hotel accommodation in addition.

I am not sure whether it would be in accordance with normal practice for free hotel accommodation to be provided, in addition to a fee, and should be grateful for your advice on this point. If, as I suspect, it is not normal practice, do you think the Treasury would be likely to object to it, bearing in mind that we shall have to obtain a further grant from C.D. & W. funds for the additional expenditure that will be required over and above that authorised in No.17?
